OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover)

If you are a student from overseas on a temporary student visa it is a condition of your visa to maintain adequate health insurance for the duration of your stay in Australia. This means you need to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and keep your policy up to date whilst you are in Australia and holding a student visa.
OSHC assists international students to meet the costs of medical and hospital care they may need while in Australia. OSHC also includes ambulance cover and limited pharmaceuticals

OVHC (Overseas Visitor Health Cover)

OVHC is health cover that complies to a standard set by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DoHA). It’s part of the requirements for a range of visas when coming to Australia.

Why do I need OVHC?

  • Unless you’re an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or a citizen of a country that has a Reciprocal Health Agreement with Australia, Getting an appropriate level of health cover is a requirement for a range of work and visitors visas since most overseas visitors or workers are not eligible for Medicare (our publicly funded healthcare for residents and citizens).
  • Most of the temporary visa subclasses must purchase and provide proof of acceptable OVHC when applying for their visa and maintain cover for the entire time they are in Australia.
  • OVHC will keep you protected against some of the costs of medical treatment if you get sick or have an accident. Not purchasing an OVHC can cost thousands of dollars!

What is Medicare?

Medicare is the Australian Government’s public healthcare system. Medicare covers things such as:

  1. Consultation and Treatment by a doctor or general practitioner (also called GPs)<.li>
  2. Consultation and Treatment by a specialist
  3. Treatment in a public hospital

What if I cancel my current health Insurance?

Your visa might be cancelled if you cancel your policy during your stay and fail to purchase a new one as maintaining an adequate level of health insurance is required to comply with the 8501 condition.
